Death Valley

It is also called "Death Valley." It is a scorching hot valley in eastern California, USA, where a record high of 58.3°C has been recorded. The lowest point of the valley is -86m above sea level, making it the lowest in the continental United States. To the west you can see the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada, including Mount Whitney (4,418m). This part of the Great Basin has an annual precipitation of only 60mm, making it a desert. The place got its name from the fact that a party of gold prospectors got lost in the valley in 1849 and escaped after almost dying. It is now known as a winter tourist destination, and was designated a national monument in 1933.
