A technique for imaging inside joints that cannot be captured by ordinary X-rays. The main subjects of examination are articular cartilage, meniscal cartilage, ligaments, synovium, cartilaginous loose bodies, soft tissue tumors, etc. To image these tissues, there are two methods: one is to inject air or nitrogen gas, which has high X-ray transmittance, into the joint cavity to create contrast between the two (negative contrast agent), and the other is to inject a liquid, which has low transmittance, (positive contrast agent). There is also a method in which negative and positive contrast agents are injected simultaneously to obtain even better contrast (double contrast method).
