An evergreen tall tree of the Myrtaceae family (illustration). Native to the Maluku Islands, it is cultivated throughout the tropics for its spicy clove aroma. In particular, the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba on the east coast of Africa account for 90% of the world's production. The tree is 4-7m tall, sometimes over 10m tall. The flowers grow in clusters at the ends of the twigs, with four white petals opening at the end of a red calyx tube. There are many stamens, and the ovary is inferior. The buds are picked shortly before they bloom and dried in the sun or over a fire. This is what is used as a spice, and because it is nail-shaped, it is named after the homonymous character for clove, and the English name clove also comes from the French word clou (nail).
