Melun (English spelling)
It is the capital of the Seine-et-Marne department in northern France. It is located 45 km south-southeast of Paris, on the Seine River, at the northern end of the Fontainebleau Forest. It originated as a Celtic fortress built on a small island in the Seine, and the city developed on both sides of the river, becoming the residence of the Capetian dynasty in the early period. It is the commercial center of the agricultural region of southern Brie, and is also home to machinery, aircraft, and food processing industries. It was heavily damaged in World War II. It is home to the Romanesque Notre-Dame Cathedral (11th century) and Saint-Soubé Cathedral (15th-16th century), and the Château de Baux-le-Vicomte (17th century), about 6 km northeast, has a beautiful Versailles-style garden. In response to the overcrowding of Paris, the new town of Moulin-de-Marne was built in the northwestern suburbs. Population 36,489 (1990).
