A Kutani ware potter from the late Edo period. Born in Komatsu, Kaga Province (Ishikawa Prefecture). His father, Genbei, went by the pen name Togo, and studied Kyo-yaki. He began making Raku ware in Komatsu in 1798 (Kansei 10), producing tea utensils and other items. Gen'emon studied under Honda Sadakichi at Wakasugi Kiln, and after his father's death, opened a kiln in Zaimokucho, Komatsu, in 1822 (Bunsei 5). He served as the chief craftsman at Wakasugi Kiln, and in 1824, he opened the Yoshidaya Kiln together with Honda Sadakichi's adopted son Seibei and others, where he also served as the chief craftsman. He also provided instruction at Rendaiji Kiln, Ono Kiln, Matsuyama Kiln and other kilns, contributing to the development of the revived Kutani kilns. He was skilled in Raku-yaki soft pottery, and was known for his woodwork-like works, such as chests, inkstone boxes, and tables, which were painted with white clay and painted with overglaze paint. His pen name was Togo, the same as his father's.
