Music performed at the imperial court under the protection of the court. Since the Middle Ages, the courts of Europe have played an important role in the development of music, influencing each other along with the church as important players in music. Records date back to ancient Rome, but its earliest flowering in music history can be seen in secular songs by troubadours and troubadours. Since then, many works have been created, including French chansons and Italian madrigals during the Renaissance, and the splendid operas and ballets of the Baroque era, as well as music for banquets. In contrast to the mystical sublimity of church music, court music was characterized by secular familiarity and a display of power. With the rise of the middle class in the 18th and 19th centuries, court music gradually lost its influence. Court music in China, Korea, and Japan is called gagaku.
