Murakami Kagaku

Japanese:
Murakami Kagaku

Japanese painter. Real name Shinichi. Born in Osaka. After studying at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, he graduated from the Kyoto Private Painting School in 1909 (Meiji 42), where he studied under Takeuchi Seihō. His contemporaries included Sakakibara Shihō, Irie Hakō, Tsuchida Bakusen, and Ono Chikukyō. His graduation work, Around February, received a commendation at the 5th Bunten Exhibition. At the 10th Bunten Exhibition in 1916 (Taishō 5), his work Amida no Zu was selected for the special prize. In 1918, he formed the Kokuga Sosaku Kyokai with Bakusen and Chikukyō, advocating unique expression, bringing a breath of fresh air to the art world. One of his representative works, "Hidakagawa Kiyohimezu" (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), was included in the second exhibition. However, around 1946, he began to suffer from asthma, and he retreated from the art world, immersing himself in his work in solitude. In "Nude" (Yamatane Museum of Art, Tokyo, 1940), he attempted to blend sensuality with religion, but thereafter he produced many Buddhist and landscape paintings, progressing to a unique, highly contemplative state of painting. Other representative works include "Cherry Blossoms at Night," "Autumn Willows," "Prince Prince Meditating Under a Tree," and "Standing Statue of Kannon Bodhisattva." He also published "Art Theory" (1941). He died in Kobe.
