...A genre of Western painting in which various objects that are immovable by themselves and deeply related to human life, such as cut flowers, fruit, tableware, smoking implements, musical instruments, books, dead fish, and small birds and animals, are freely arranged and painted on a table or other surface. Small living animals such as insects and mice are often depicted in a subordinate role, but birds and plants in their natural form, that is, plants rooted in the soil, do not take center stage, as in the related Oriental genre of flower and bird painting.
