The English land register was created by order of William I in 1086. The name was a reference to the authority of the contents of the land register, and came into use in the 12th century. In order to investigate the state of affairs in England, which he had newly come under his control after the Norman Conquest, and to collect taxes, William convened juries at meetings of each shire and county, and had them investigate the following items for each manor:

1086年にウィリアム1世の命により作成されたイングランドの検地帳。名称は，検地帳の記載内容の権威を〈最後の審判の日(ドゥームズデー)〉にたとえたもので，12世紀以降用いられるようになった。ウィリアムはノルマン･コンクエストにより新たに支配するに至ったイングランドの事情を調査して税を徴収するため，各州(シャイア)，各郡(ハンドレッド)の集会に陪審を招集し，各荘園ごとに，以下の各項について調査させた。
