Great Dividing Range

Japanese: 大分水嶺山脈 - だいぶんすいれいさんみゃく（英語表記）Great Dividing Range

A mountain range that stretches from north to south in the eastern part of the Australian continent. It is also called the Great Dividing Range. It was formed by the uplift of the Palaeozoic strata from the Mesozoic to the Tertiary eras, and forms the Eastern Highlands, one of the three major topographical divisions of the continent. It consists of one or several series of large and small watersheds that stretch from Cape York (northern Queensland) to the Grampian Mountains (western Victoria). It has a certain importance, such as its influence on precipitation distribution, but its name is a little exaggerated compared to its actual shape. The average elevation is only around 900m, and highlands over 1000m are limited to a few areas such as the Australian Alps and the New England Mountains, and most of the area is just a series of intermittent mountains, hills, and plateaus several hundred meters high.

オーストラリア大陸東部に南北にのびる山脈。グレート･ディバイディング･レーンジともいう。古生層が中生代から第三紀にかけて隆起したもので，同大陸の三大地形区分の一つである東部高地を形成する。ヨーク岬(クイーンズランド州北端)からグランピアン山地(ビクトリア州西部)に至る1～数列の大小の分水界からなる。降水量分布への影響など，一定の重要性はあるが，名称は実際の山容に比べていささか誇大である。平均標高はわずか900m前後で，1000m以上の高地はオーストラリア･アルプスやニューイングランド山脈など一部に限られ，大部分では高さ数百mの山地，丘陵，台地が断続的に連なるにすぎない。
