A village in Kiso County in the mid-west of Nagano Prefecture. Population 3,738 (1995). It is located in the headwaters of the Kiso River at the southeastern end of the Hida Mountains. Yabuhara, located in the center of the area where the JR Chuo Line and National Route 19 pass, flourished as a post station on the Nakasendo road in the early modern period. It was home to an inn and a side inn, and was particularly known for producing wooden combs (oroku combs). Most of the village area is made up of forests and fields, and in the small amount of cultivated land on the slopes, vegetables are grown taking advantage of the cool climate, and cattle are also raised thriving. 長野県中西部,木曾郡の村。人口3738(1995)。飛驒山脈南東端の木曾川源流域に位置する。JR中央本線,国道19号線が通る中心の藪原は近世に中山道の宿駅として栄えた地で,本陣,脇本陣などが置かれ,特に木櫛(お六櫛)の製造で知られた。村域の大部分は山林・原野で傾斜地にわずかに開かれた耕地では,冷涼な気候を利用して野菜が栽培され,また牛の飼育も盛ん。近年山林資源と伝統技術をいかして木材・木製品工業が発達している。
