1502‐55 (Bunkai 2‐Kouji 1) A tea master from the late Muromachi period. Commonly known as Shingoro, his given name was Nakazai, his pen name was Ikkan Koji, and his Buddhist name was Jōō. He admired the tea style of Murata Jūkō, the founder of wabi-cha tea, and further simplified the tea ceremony and promoted the use of cursive writing, gaining many disciples and spreading Jūkō's tea ceremony. Among them was Sen no Rikyū, who later became known as the master of wabi-cha tea and the tea saint. Jōō's biography is not entirely clear, but he was a member of the Takeda clan, the military governor of Wakasa, and his grandfather Nakakiyo was killed in battle during the Onin War. His father Nobuhisa wandered around the country before settling in Sakai, Senshu, and changing his surname to Takeno. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
