A district of Owase City in southern Mie Prefecture. Formerly known as Kuki Village. It is located on the northern shore of Kuki Bay, south of Kuki Cape in the Kumano Nada Sea. It is said to be the birthplace of the Kuki clan, who became famous as the Kuki Navy after the Nanboku-cho period. It has been a key location for maritime traffic since ancient times, and was used as a port for waiting for the wind. During the Edo period, it was also the location of a smoke signal station and a lookout post for foreign ships. The surrounding area is rich in fishing grounds and is famous for its large yellowtail ooshikiami (fish-bearing nets). The Kuki Yellowtail Festival is held in January. Most of the peninsula is virgin forest protected as a fish-bearing forest, and is designated as a prefectural natural monument and a special protected area of Yoshino-Kumano National Park. The JR Kisei Main Line and National Route 311 pass through the area. [Tatsuo Ito] [Reference] | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
