[Died] December 19, 1906, Las Palmas, Canary Islands. British legal historian and historian. Graduated from Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Became a lawyer in 1876, and after practicing law, he moved into historical research, becoming an assistant professor at Cambridge University in 1884 and a professor there in 1888. He devoted himself to the scientific study of legal history, and in 1887 founded the Selden Society. His many works contributed to the development of English legal history and medieval history. His main works include "Bracton's Note-Book" (1887), The History of English Law before the Time of Edward I (vols. 1, 95, vols. 2, 98, co-authored with F. Pollock), "Domesday Book and Beyond" (97), and The Constitutional History of England (1908).

[Died] October 3, 1595. Thirlestane Scottish politician. Full name John Maitland, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane. He became Lord Keeper of the Great Seal in 1567, and was briefly imprisoned for supporting Queen Mary Stuart. He became a Privy Councillor to James VI (I) in 1583, Chief Counsellor in 1586, and Lord Chancellor in 1587. As the king's chief aide, he promoted a policy of union with England and compromise with the Church of England. He was created Baron Thirlestane in 1590. Maitland's policies caused the aristocracy to resent him, and he was temporarily demoted in 1592, but he remained Lord Chancellor until his death. He was the younger brother of William Maitland.

Anglican ecclesiastical historian. He was a nonconformist lawyer who converted to Anglicanism and became the minister of Christ Church, Gloucester (1823-27). He was an accomplished scholar of church history. He was editor of the British Magazine. His main works include "Facts and Documents Illustrative of the History, Doctrine, and Rites of the Ancient Albigenses and Waldenses" (32) and "Essays on Subjects Connected with the Reformation in England" (49).

[Died] June 9, 1573? Leith Scottish politician. Brother of J. Maitland. In 1561, he became Lord Secretary of State to Mary Stuart when she returned from France, and thereafter plotted to have her take the English throne. He remained in Scotland after Mary fled to England, and in 1569 attempted to marry her to the 4th Duke of Norfolk, but failed. In 1570, he led the supporters of Mary in a civil war, and held Edinburgh Castle until 1573, when he surrendered and died in prison.

A city on the Hunter River in eastern New South Wales, Australia, 31 km northwest of Newcastle. It is the center of agricultural and commercial processing in the agricultural and livestock areas of the lower Hunter River basin, including dairy farming. It has frequently suffered from flood damage. The South Maitland coalfield lies to the south. Population 46,733 (1991 estimate).

スコットランドの政治家。フルネーム John Maitland, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane。1567年国璽尚書になり,女王メアリー・スチュアートを支持して,一時投獄。1583年ジェームズ6世(1世)の枢密顧問官,1586年主席顧問,1587年大法官になり,王の側近筆頭として,イギリスとの合同,国教会との妥協政策を推進。1590年サールステーン男爵に叙された。メートランドの政策は貴族の反感を買い,1592年一時失脚したが,死去するまで大法官の職にとどまった。ウィリアム・メートランドの弟。
