〘Noun〙① In the past, a samurai boy was given an eboshi hat by an eboshi parent and an eboshi name at the time of coming of age ceremony. A coming-of-age child. ⇔Eboshi parent. ※Kōyasan documents - October 18, 1169, Aho Gyōmune's land and wilderness transfer document " According to this, Abe no Tei's true eboshi child will be given this land for a perpetual period."② A child received from another person. An adopted child. ※Toraakirahon Kyogen - Biku Tei (late Muromachi period - early early modern period) "From ancient times to the present, this is the first time that a samurai has taken the eboshi hat of a child." [Epigraphy] (1) In the samurai society of the Middle Ages, at the coming-of-age ceremony, a child's name was abandoned and he was given an eboshi name, and it was common for one character of the eboshi parent's name to be given to him.
(2) Since the early modern period, this custom has spread widely among the general public, and in some areas it has continued to be practiced until recent times, and words such as "eboshigo" and "ebushigo-yubushikodomo-yoboshioya" were used.

〘名〙① 昔、武家の男子で、元服の際、烏帽子親に烏帽子をかぶせてもらい、烏帽子名をつけてもらった者。元服子。⇔烏帽子親。※高野山文書‐嘉応元年(1169)一〇月一八日・阿保行宗田地荒野譲状「依阿保守真烏帽子子、彼地を限永代譲与処也」② 他からもらい受けた子。養子。※虎明本狂言・比丘貞(室町末‐近世初)「むかしが今に至るまで、びくにんのゑほしごを取る事は、是ぞはじめの祝言なる」[語誌](1)中世の武家社会には、元服の儀式にあたって童名を廃して烏帽子名をもらうことが行なわれ、その際烏帽子親の名前の一字をもらうことも多かった。
(2)近世以降、このような習俗は広く民間にもいきわたり、近年まで行なわれた地域もあり、「えぼしご」や「えぶしご・ゆぶしこども・よぼしおや」などの語が用いられた。
