The three festivals held at Ise Jingu Shrine since ancient times are the Kanname-sai and the Tsukinami-no-matsuri held in June and December. They are also called the Sansetsu-sai and Sando-Osai. They are the most historic and important of the shrine's rituals. The festival involves a great purification ritual on the last day of the previous month, and a divination ritual to determine whether or not each person has sinned or been impure. The basis of this is the offering of the Yuki-no-Omike three times a year. First, the first rice grains from the sacred rice fields are removed and stored in the rice storehouse. The offerings are offered twice a year, once at the Kanname-sai (September, now October), once in December, and once at dusk at the Tsukinami-no-matsuri in June of the following year.
