Kaspar Hauser

Around 1812-33
In 1828, an unidentified boy was rescued in Nuremberg. He was about 16 years old at the time, but could barely speak and had a very low intelligence. He was imprisoned in a dungeon for a long time, always forced to sit, given only water and bread, and raised without contact with the outside world. He was taken in by the legal scholar P. A. Feuerbach and eventually became his secretary, but was attacked twice by an unknown assailant and killed. There are theories about his origins, such as that he was the son of Napoleon I or the Grand Duke of Baden, Karl Friedrich, and it is said that he was imprisoned and killed over an inheritance dispute.

1828年，身元不明の男としてニュルンベルクで保護された少年。当時16歳くらいだったが，ろくに話もできず，きわめて低い知能しかなかった。長く地下牢に幽閉されていたらしく，いつも座位を強制され，水とパンだけ与えられて，世間と没交渉で育った。法学者P.J.A.vonフォイエルバハに引き取られ，やがて書記にまでなるが，何者かに2度にわたって襲われて絶命した。出自については，ナポレオン1世の子とか，バーデン大公カール･フリードリヒの子とかの説があり，相続をめぐって幽閉，抹殺されたと称される。
