1892‐1955 German author. Born in Berlin as the son of a worker, he left home at the age of 16 and wandered around Europe and the US. He served as a sailor in World War I, and led the Wilhelmshaven sailors' uprising in 1918. His novel The Kaiser's Coolies (1929), based on this experience, attracted a wide readership for its sharp social criticism. He lived in exile from 1933 onwards, returning to Weimar in 1945, but after moving to West Germany in 1947 he wrote works hostile to socialism. His major works include The Kaiser Gone, but the Generals Remained (1932), Stalingrad (1945), Moscow (1952), and Berlin (1954). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
