Pori (English spelling)
Pori is a city in Turkujäpori County, in the southwest of Finland. It was founded around the 12th century, and in 1365 it was granted a royal charter to become an autonomous city under the name Urvila. In 1558 it moved to its current location. Despite two major fires in the 16th and 19th centuries, it was rebuilt in its current location because it was the most ideal location for commerce and trade. The modern city of Pori is a major industrial and cultural city, with a theatre (1884), the Satakunta Art Museum (88), Finland's largest shortwave radio station, and a port that can be used all year round. Its main industries are timber and wood products, nickel and copper smelting, and machinery manufacturing. It is also connected to Tampere by rail, and has air routes to the county capital Turku and the capital Helsinki. Population 76,544 (estimated 1992).
