A fund established in 1973 to provide development loans to developing countries in Africa. Abbreviated as ADF. The African Development Bank (AfDB) was established in 1964 to contribute to the economic and social development of African countries, but the AfDB's loan conditions were semi-commercial, which placed a heavy burden on developing countries in Africa and did not fully meet their expectations. Therefore, the ADF was established to complement AfDB's activities and provide soft loans. The headquarters is located in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, but due to the country's political instability, it was temporarily moved to Tunis, Tunisia in February 2003. As of the end of 2009, 26 countries including Japan and the AfDB were members. The loan conditions of the fund are lenient, with no interest (but a fee of 0.75%) and a repayment period of 50 years (including a grace period of 10 years), just like the International Development Association (World Bank). Lending is focused on low-profit areas such as agriculture, transportation, and public works.
