Japanese: ムカデ(蜈蚣∥百足) - ムカデ（英語表記）centipede

A general term for the group of animals in the class Chilopoda, excluding the order Scutigera. In Japan, the large Japanese giant centipede (illustration) and the blue centipede are often simply called centipedes. Centipedes consist of a head and a body, with a pair of antennae on the head, and some have eyes and some do not. They have a group of simple eyes. They are feared for their mouthparts, two pairs of small jaws and one pair of large jaws, as well as a pair of powerful jaw limbs called venom claws. The body has a series of 177 consecutive segments, with more than 15 similar segments, each with a pair of walking legs on either side, followed by reproductive and anal segments.

節足動物門の1綱唇脚類のうち，ゲジ目をのぞく動物群の総称。また日本では大きなトビズムカデ（イラスト）や，アオズムカデを単にムカデと呼ぶ場合も多い。ムカデ類は頭と胴からなり，頭には1対の触角があり，眼はあるものとないものとがある。眼は単眼の集り。口器として2対の小あご，1対の大あごのほかに1対の強大な毒爪（どくそう）と呼ばれる顎肢（がくし）があり恐れられる。胴は各1対の歩肢を両側にもつ同じような胴節が15以上177節連続してあり，それに続いて生殖節と肛門節がある。
