Oat - Oat

Japanese: カラスムギ - からすむぎ
Oat - Oat

A biennial grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm is erect and 50-90 cm tall. The panicle is about 20 cm long, the branches are whorled, and the spikelets that open horizontally are large and drooping. It flowers in June and July. There are three florets, which fall off when mature. The glume is round on the back, about 2.5 cm long, and encases the entire floret. The glume is somewhat leathery and has coarse hairs, and the tip is divided into two like teeth, and the awn emerges from the back. The awn is 3-4 cm long, strongly bent, and twisted. Native to Europe and Western Asia, it is found throughout Japan and is a weed that has naturalized on the edges of fields and wastelands. Its name means wheat eaten by crows, and it is also called chahikigusa (tea-cut grass). Its shape is very similar to edible oats (Avena sativa).
