Eight-Eight Fleet

The Imperial Japanese Navy's shipbuilding plan was based on eight battleships and eight cruisers, with the United States as the hypothetical enemy. The 88 Fleet was decided based on the Navy's defense requirements based on the "Imperial Defense Policy" formulated in 1907 (Meiji 40). However, financial difficulties after the Russo-Japanese War prevented the plan from being realized, and the 84 Fleet plan was approved at the Defense Council in 1914 (Taisho 3), and the budget was passed in the 39th Diet in 1917. The following year, the 40th Diet passed the budget necessary to establish the 86 Fleet. After these transitional measures, the budget for the 88 Fleet was passed in the 43rd Diet in 1920. According to this, the fleet was scheduled to be completed in 1927 (Showa 2), but as a result of the Washington Naval Conference in 1921, the plan was changed, and only four battleships were built: Nagato, Mutsu, Akagi, which was later converted into an aircraft carrier, and Kaga.

アメリカを仮想敵国とする戦艦八隻、巡洋艦八隻を主力とする日本海軍の建艦計画。1907年（明治40）策定の「帝国国防方針」に基づく海軍の国防所要兵力で八八艦隊の方針が決定された。しかし日露戦後の財政困難はその実現を許さず、1914年（大正3）の防務会議で八四艦隊案が認められ、その予算が通過したのは17年の第39議会であった。その翌年の第40議会では八六艦隊成立に必要な予算が通過した。以上のような経過措置を経て、20年の第43議会で八八艦隊の予算が通過した。これによると27年（昭和2）完成の予定であったが、21年のワシントン軍縮会議の結果、計画は変更となり、戦艦は長門(ながと)、陸奥(むつ)と、のちに航空母艦に転換された赤城(あかぎ)、加賀(かが)の四隻がつくられただけで終わった。
