Kakuremino - Hidden

An evergreen small tree of the Araliaceae family (APG classification: Araliaceae). It usually grows to about 5 meters tall, with yellowish-grayish bark. The leaves are alternate, thick, leathery, broadly ovate with 3-5 shallow lobes, 6-12 cm long, and long stalks. They flower in July and August in umbels at the ends of current-year branches, and are pale yellow-green. The drupes ripen to a dark purple color. They often grow in coastal areas, and are found in Honshu west of Miyagi Prefecture, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa, the Korean Peninsula, and Taiwan. The name comes from the leaf shape, which resembles a raincoat. They are used for equipment and as garden trees, and the sap is called yellow lacquer and used as paint. There are 90 species of the Aralia genus in Asia and tropical America.

ウコギ科（APG分類：ウコギ科）の常緑小高木。高さは普通は約5メートルで、樹皮は黄灰白色を帯びる。葉は互生し、厚い革質、広卵形で浅く3～5裂し、長さ6～12センチメートル、長柄がある。花は7～8月、当年枝の先の散形花序につき、淡黄緑色。核果は黒紫色に熟す。沿岸地によく生え、宮城県以西の本州、四国、九州、沖縄、朝鮮半島と台湾に分布する。名は、葉の形を蓑(みの)に例えたもの。器具材や庭木として用いるほか、樹液を黄漆と称し塗料とする。カクレミノ属はアジアと熱帯アメリカに90種分布する。
