1776‐1827 Mexican journalist and author. His novel The Parrot and the Scabies (1816) is considered the first and greatest novel to have been written in Latin America. It is an attack on Mexico's backwardness at the end of the colonial period, and while it employs the traditional Spanish picaresque (villain novel) style, it is also significant as a work that criticizes the Spanish colonial system in Mexico, including education, religion, and medical care.
