Railway vehicle

Japanese: 鉄道車両 - てつどうしゃりょう

A general term for vehicles used to transport people and freight on railroads. They are broadly divided into motorized cars that have their own prime mover and passenger and freight cars that do not have a motor, and motorized cars are further divided into steam cars, internal combustion cars, electric cars, etc., depending on the source of power. Motorized cars are also divided into locomotives that only pull passenger and freight cars and do not carry passengers or freight on them (steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, electric locomotives, etc.), and steam railcars, internal combustion railcars, electric trains, etc. that can move on their own and can carry passengers and freight.

鉄道において人間および貨物の輸送に用いられる車両の総称。みずから原動機をもって動く動力車と，動力をもたない客貨車に大別され，動力車はさらに動力源により，蒸気車，内燃車，電気車などに分けられる。また，動力車は客貨車を引っ張るだけで，この上に旅客や貨物を積むことのない機関車(蒸気機関車，ディーゼル機関車，電気機関車など)と，自分で動けるうえに旅客，貨物を積載することのできる蒸気動車，内燃動車，電車などに分けられる。
