This historical tale is written in kana in the style of a chronological story, and covers the history of the court nobility over a period of 15 generations, approximately 200 years, from Emperor Uda to Emperor Horikawa in 1092. In old manuscripts, it is written as "Eiga Monogatari." It consists of 40 volumes (30 volumes in variant versions). The title comes from the fact that it focuses on the glory of Fujiwara no Michinaga, and since it is also a story of succession among generations, it is also known as "Yotsugu" or "Yotsugu Monogatari" along with "Okagami." Following the example of "The Tale of Genji," each volume has a title, with the first 30 volumes ("The Forest of Cranes") being the main volume, and the following 10 volumes ("Flower Viewing at the Imperial Palace") being sequels, and it is believed that the sequels were written by someone other than the author of the main volume.
