1849‐1919 German linguist. Studied at the University of Leipzig, where he later taught. He engaged in comparative research of Indo-European languages, particularly Greek, and published groundbreaking papers in opposition to his teacher Georg Curtius (1820-1885). He organized the Junggrammatiker school of young researchers and became its leader, laying the foundations for the full-scale historical study of language (comparative linguistics). His work, Grundriss der vergleichenden Grammatik der indogermanischen Sprachen (Comparative Grammar of Indo-European Languages), co-authored with B. Delbrück, is a major work that remains indispensable to research in this field today. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
