1853 54-96 An Iranian enlightened thinker. Born in Bardshir, Kerman, as the son of a landowner. After studying basic Islamic studies in Kerman, he traveled throughout Iran. He then moved to Istanbul, where he criticized the Qajar dynasty's despotic ruling system in the newspaper Ahtar, while also advocating rationalism and engaging in anti-religious activities. He was well versed in Western thought and was also influenced by anarchism and socialism. Following the assassination of the Qajar monarch Naser al-Din Shah (1896), he was arrested and detained by the Ottoman government, then handed over to the Iranian authorities and executed in Tabriz.
