Yokoi Chiaki

Japanese: 横井千秋 - よこいちあき

1738-1801 A Japanese classicist from the mid to late Edo period.
Born on March 1, 1720. A samurai of the Owari Nagoya domain. While working as a servant, he studied under Motoori Norinaga and invested a large amount of money to support Norinaga's publication of works such as "Kojiki-den." He passed away on July 24, 1712. He was 64 years old. His given name was Hirotoki. He was also known by the names Kingo, Kippei, and Jurozaemon. His other pen name was Yuzono. His works include "Poetry Theory" and "Words of Heaven."

元文3年3月1日生まれ。尾張(おわり)名古屋藩士。用人などをつとめるかたわら本居宣長(もとおり-のりなが)にまなび,巨資を投じて宣長の「古事記伝」などの出版を援助した。享和元年7月24日死去。64歳。名は宏時。通称は金吾,吉平,十郎左衛門。別号に木綿苑(ゆうぞの)。著作に「詩歌論」「天真中詞(あめのまなかのことば)」など。
