Born March 26, 1850 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts.
[Died] May 22, 1898. Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. American novelist. Born to a clergyman in New England, he studied law after traveling to Germany and was qualified as a lawyer, but did not open a practice. Instead, he worked as a newspaper editor, and published more than 30 novels during that time. Among his works is the famous Looking Backward, or 2000-1887 (1888), a utopian novel that looks back on America from the year 2000 to the present day. He also wrote works of social reform, such as The Duke of Stockbridge (79), which depicts the peasant uprising "Shay's Rebellion," and Equality (97), a sequel to Looking Backward.
