A fruit tree of the Rosaceae family. Also known as plum. There are Japanese plums and European plums, with most of the plums in Japan being the former, which originated along the Yangtze River in China. Representative varieties include Koshu Daihatankyo, Beauty, Soldam, Manzaemon, and Beimomo. They produce small white flowers around the end of March. The fruit is thinned out in mid-to-late May, and many varieties are harvested in July. They flower early, so avoid areas with late frosts. Also, fruit set is poor unless varieties are planted together. In addition to eating them raw, they are used to make jam and dried plums (prunes).

バラ科の果樹。プラムとも。ニホンスモモとヨーロッパスモモとがあり，日本のものは大部分が前者で，原産地は中国の長江沿岸。甲州大巴旦杏(はたんきょう)，ビューティ，ソルダム，万左衛門，米桃などが代表的品種。３月下旬ごろ白い小花をつける。５月中・下旬果実を間引き，７月中に収穫される品種が多い。開花期が早いので，晩霜のあるところは避ける。また品種を混ぜて植えないと結実が悪い。生食のほか，ジャム，干しスモモ（プルーン）などにする。
