Yi-guan-dao (English spelling)

Japanese: 一貫道 - いっかんどう（英語表記）Yi-guan-dao

A Chinese religious secret society. Its name comes from the Analects of Confucius, "My Way is One and Persists Through It." It attempted to uphold the principle of consistency among the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and also adopted Christianity and Islam to preach the unity of the five religions. It was founded by Lu Zhongyi at the end of the 19th century. It regarded Laozi as its founder, and under the 15th patriarch Wang Jueyi, it developed in the 1880s, and the 18th patriarch Zhang Tianran expanded its influence from Hebei and Shandong to the Yangtze River basin. Its doctrine is centered on the idea of the "Three Periods of the End of the World," which predicts that the world is now in its Latter Days of the Law and that a great disaster will soon come at the end of the world, and it hoped for the emergence of a god or Buddha to save it from that time. Because it was anti-communist and active as an anti-communist guerrilla, it was severely oppressed from around 1950, and its activities gradually declined.

中国の宗教的秘密結社。その名称は，『論語』の「吾が道は一もって之を貫く」に由来し，儒仏道三教を一貫する理を掲げようとし，キリスト教やイスラム教も取入れて，五教帰一を説いた。 19世紀末ごろ，路中一が創設。老子を道祖とし，15代の祖師王覚一のもとに 1880年代に発展し，18代張天然が河北，山東から揚子江流域一帯にまで教勢を拡大した。教義は，いまや世界は末法であり，やがて終末の大災難が到来すると予言する「三期末劫」の考えを中心とし，その劫を救ってくれる神仏の出現を望んだ。反共主義に立ち，反共ゲリラとして活躍したので，1950年頃から激しく弾圧され，次第に活動は衰退した。
