In the narrow sense of the word, amulets in Japan are pieces of paper on which the names or images of deities, Buddhist scriptures, or incantations are written, and they are justified by the beliefs of Buddhism, Taoism, and Onmyodo. However, other than these, coarse-meshed baskets called "onikago" hung in gardens on Setsubun and other days to ward off monsters, and razors and other bladed objects placed at the bedside of the deceased, can also be considered a kind of amulet for special occasions such as the transition between seasons or death.
