…Russian rural communities, also called obshchina or obshchestvo. In ancient times, blood-based communities existed in Russia, but with the establishment of class society, they developed into territorial rural communities.

During the imperial era, peasants, whether on state land or on landlord estates, formed village-based communities called mirs or obshchinas. The communities shared the responsibility for paying taxes, tributes, military service, and other obligations.
