Land owned by the federal government in the United States is called public land, and the policy regarding its management, operation, and disposal is called public land policy. Most of the land of the United States was once public land, except for the Atlantic coastal states, which were British colonies before independence, and even today about one-third of the land is public land. Furthermore, the history of America is also the history of the expansion of the West, and the method of disposing of public land had a major impact on the progress of the expansion and the type of society that would be created after the expansion.

アメリカ合衆国の連邦政府所有地を公有地といい，その管理，運営，処分に関する政策を総称して公有地政策という。合衆国の国土は，独立以前にイギリスの植民地であった大西洋岸諸州を除き，ほとんどが一度は公有地であったし，今日でも国土の約3分の1は公有地である。また，アメリカの歴史は西部開拓の歴史でもあるが，開拓の進展を左右し，開拓後につくられる社会の形態を決定するうえで，公有地処分の方法は大きな影響を与えた。
