A deciduous shrub of the Tamariaceae family. It resembles Tamarisk, but has 10 stamens fused at the base, which distinguishes it from Tamarisk, which has 4-8 stamens. The leaves are small, lanceolate, scaly, and blue-green, and alternate. The flowers are numerous and pale pink to white, in racemes at the terminal ends of the branches. As a small shrub about 2m tall, it is cultivated as a flowering tree, cut flower, and potted plant. It is native to the arid regions of southern Europe and western Asia. About 10 species of Myricaria are distributed in the Mediterranean region, roughly the same area as Tamarisk, and in the arid regions of Asia. In addition to being used as a flowering tree, some species use the branches as fodder for goats and sheep. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
