Shahnameh (English spelling)

Japanese: シャー･ナーメ（英語表記）Shāh nāma

Meaning "Book of the Kings," this is the largest national epic poem of Iran, written in Persian by Firdousi. He began composing it around 980, using Abu Mansur's "Book of the Kings in Prose" and other sources as his main source of information, and after more than 30 years of devotion to it, he finally completed it in 1010 and dedicated it to Mahmud of the Ghaznavid dynasty. This great work, written in the masnabi verse form and consisting of approximately 60,000 couplets, is a compilation of Iranian mythology, legends, folklore, and history, and describes the reigns of 50 kings from four successive dynasties, from the founding of Iran to the fall of the Sassanid dynasty in the mid-7th century.
