A former town in Kaijo County in the northeast of Chiba Prefecture. It straddles the Shimousa Plateau and the northern end of the Kujukuri Plain. The plains are part of the "Hikata 80,000 koku" tidal flats that were reclaimed in the early modern period, and the Tone Irrigation Canal runs through it, making it one of the prefecture's leading grain producing areas. Livestock farming is thriving, and rice, vegetable cultivation, and greenhouse horticulture are also practiced. The Sobu Main Line runs through it. In July 2005, it was incorporated into Asahi City along with Hikata Town in Katori County and Iioka Town in Kaijo County. 28.59 km2 . Population: 11,256 (2003).
