Pola in Italian. A port city located at the southern tip of the Istria Peninsula in northwestern Croatia. It became a Roman territory in the 2nd century, and was ruled by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire before being transferred from Italy to the former Yugoslavia and becoming a part of Croatia in 1991. It is rich in Roman ruins, and the amphitheater and the old castle (now the Archaeological Museum) on the hill in the center of the city are famous. The good natural harbor overlooking Pula Bay has a naval base and two shipyards. Along with industries such as machinery, textiles, cement, and glass, the tourism industry is also well developed.
