German poet and novelist. Son of a pastor, both parents and grandparents were involved in missionary work in India. He dropped out of seminary and attracted attention with works such as Anthology of Poems (1902). He made a name for himself with the sentimental coming-of-age novel Peter Camenzind (1904, translated into Japanese as Nostalgia), and wrote autobiographical works such as Beneath the Wheel. In 1911 he traveled to India and elsewhere. During World War I he openly denounced the war and formed a friendship with Romain Rolland. Since 1923 he has been a Swiss citizen. In his works, from Demian (1919) to Siddhartha (1922) and The Wolves of the Wilderness (1927), he rigorously explores the inner self, troubled by the conflict between spirit and nature. After Narziss and Goldmund (1930), which depicts the fusion of sensuality and spirit, he spent ten years working on his masterpiece The Glass Bead Game (1943), which depicts a spiritual utopia and demonstrates a state of mature harmony. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. His work has been widely read in Japan since the 1930s. → Related article Maulbronn Monastery Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
