Shigayama style

Japanese:
Shigayama style

A school of Japanese dance. It is the oldest school, founded by Shigayama Mansaku (?-1729), the first choreographer in Edo. Mansaku started out as a drummer in the Kita school, but became a musician at the Nakamura-za theater, and because he excelled in dancing, he switched to choreography and took the name Nakamura Denjiro I. However, there are other theories, and his career is unclear. The second head of the school (?-1781) was Mansaku's son, and the third head (?-1783) was the second head's son, both of whom took the name Nakamura Denjiro. The eldest daughter of the third head became the 9th head of the school, Shigayama Sei (?-1802), and the school was passed on to women. The name Sei has been passed down from generation to generation, up to the current 15th head of the school, 7th head Sei (1914- ). The heyday of the Shigayama school was when the famous actor Nakamura Nakazo I (1736-90), a relative of Shigayama, was active, and he left a legacy of the "Shigayama Nakazo style" in works such as "Tongue-dipping Sanbaso," "Nakazo Madness," and "Seki no Tobira." He also briefly succeeded Shigayama VIII and opened a training studio as a dance teacher. Nakazo III (1809-86), who lived from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, also had a deep connection with the school, and passed on the style of Shigayama. Characterized by its old-fashioned dance and techniques, Shiga Aoi, who represented Seii, held 10 "Shigayama School Classical Studies Groups" starting in 1980, and such works as "Shigayama Sanbaso," "Nakazo's Fuji Musume," and "Musume Dojoji" attracted attention. In recent years, there has been little activity as a school.
