Asodani

The northern crater floor of the Aso Caldera, located in the center of Kyushu. Also known as Uchigo Valley. A gentle slope connects the central crater cone group made of andesite to the south and the crater floor, and an alluvial fan has developed at the foot of the mountain from sediment supplied by the central crater cone group. The inner wall of the outer rim made of andesite agglomerate to the north, east, and west is a steep slope close to vertical, but the development of talus makes the slope slightly gentler. The Kurokawa River, which flows west through the Aso Valley, collects small rivers originating from the surrounding slopes and has an extremely low gradient of about 1 in 400, and meanders significantly. As a result, there are many wet rice fields on the alluvial surface of the valley bottom, and in order to alleviate this, land consolidation has been carried out repeatedly since the end of the Meiji period. The goal was almost achieved throughout the entire Aso Valley through a large-scale prefectural farmland improvement project (1970-1996).

九州の中央に位置する阿蘇カルデラの北の火口原。別名内郷谷(うちごうだに)。南の安山岩類からなる中央火口丘群と、火口原の間は緩傾斜面で連なり、山裾(すそ)には中央火口丘群から供給された土砂により扇状地が発達している。また、北、東、西の安山岩質集塊岩からなる外輪内壁と火口原との間は、垂直に近い急傾斜面で、崖錐(がいすい)の発達がその斜面角度をわずかながら緩やかなものにしている。四周の斜面に源を発する小河川を集めて、阿蘇谷を西に流れる黒川は、河川勾配(こうばい)約400分の1ときわめて低く、著しく蛇行している。したがって、谷底の沖積面には湿田が多く、この解消のため、明治末期から繰り返し耕地整理が行われ、県営大規模圃場(ほじょう)整備事業（1970～1996）によって、その目的は阿蘇谷全域でほぼ達成された。
