Hachiro Miyazaki
Year of death: April 6, 1877
Year of birth: 1851
A freedom and civil rights activist in the early Meiji period. His name was Shingo. He was the second son of a local samurai from Arao Village, Tamana County, Higo Province (Arao City, Kumamoto Prefecture), and the older brother of Tamizo and Toten. He left the domain school Jishukan and traveled to Tokyo in 1870 (Meiji 3) to study at a private school run by Nishi Amane and others. In February 1874, he submitted the Seikanron (Conquest of Korea) to the Left House, and in April, he served in the Taiwan expedition. After participating in the founding convention of the Aikokusha Society in February 1875, he founded the Ueki School in Kumamoto, which used Minyakuron as its scripture, and launched a campaign to establish a prefectural citizen's association, while also writing anti-government articles for the Hyoron Shimbun and other publications. In the Satsuma Rebellion (1877), he intended to "let Saigo take over the world and then rebel again," so he formed the Kumamoto Cooperative Corps and joined the Satsuma army, fighting against the Emperor's army and dying in battle in Yatsushiro. <References> Uemura Kimio, "The Tale of the Miyazaki Brothers," Japan Volume 1
