A city in the west of Burkina Faso, inland in West Africa. Population: 300,000 (1993). It is the center of the territory of the region's indigenous Bobo people, and is connected by rail and road to the capital, Ouagadougou, and the port city of Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire, and has an international airport. From 1934, when the railway reached from Abidjan, until 1954, when it was extended to Ouagadougou, it was the terminus of the railway and was a larger commercial city than Ouagadougou. It is a distribution center for groundnuts, sisal, sesame, and cattle, and has industries such as groundnut oil, sugar, cotton ginning, soap, and bricks. 西アフリカの内陸,ブルキナファソ西部の都市。人口30万(1993)。この地方の原住民ボボ族の領域の中心で,首都ワガドゥグやコートジボアールの港湾都市アビジャンと鉄道や道路で結ばれ,国際空港もある。アビジャンからの鉄道の到達した1934年からワガドゥグまで延長された54年までは,鉄道の終点としてワガドゥグをしのぐ商業都市であった。ラッカセイ,サイザル麻,ゴマ,牛などの集散地で,ラッカセイ油,砂糖,繰綿,セッケン,煉瓦などの工業がある。
