The idea of rediscovering the good things about one's hometown and strengthening the local ties between people and land is called local theory. It is closely related to current regionalism and other such concepts. The academic field that studies these things is called local studies (Heimatkunde in German). From the late 18th century to the early 19th century, interest in traditional society and affection for local and regional communities were aroused in Western Europe. J. Möser searched for an ideal image of a village in one's hometown in order to save villages from the reality of their desolate condition, while the Brothers Grimm worked to collect folk tales from various regions that tended to be scattered and explore their significance, and both became pioneers of folklore studies.
