Underground Theatre

Underground Theatre

… [Tetsuo Toshimitsu]
[New Theatre in Japan]
In Japan, the 1960s and 1970s, especially from 1967 to the first half of the 1970s, were a time of extremely vigorous activity in "new theater." Specifically, the activities of Kara Juro, Terayama Shuji, Suzuki Tadashi, Sato Makoto, and others, who often made the headlines in newspapers at the time as a kind of "incident" of morality, were collectively referred to by the mass media at the time as "underground theater," or, as is often abbreviated, "angura theater." The term "angura theater" was originally imported from English, but it seems to have been coined by journalists with the several underground theaters that did actually appear in mind, to capture the overall tendency of a group of new theater that, in its dramatic imagination, was more underground than daylight, and more anti-establishment than establishment, and the term gradually became established.
