...The many spherical foxtail-like objects found on the margins of mature bodies are cysts that develop from fertilized eggs, and many carpospores are formed inside. Species closely related to Suginori include G. intermedia Suringar, which grows lying on rocks, G. mamillosa (Good.et Wood.) J.Ag., which resembles squid legs, and G. pacifica Kjellm., which has a leaf-like body with many warty protrusions. All of the species in Japan are small, but along the Pacific coast of the Americas, there are many large leaf-like species such as G. corymbifera (Kuetz.) J.Ag. and G. exasperata Harv.et Bailey, which grow to over 1m in length and 30-50cm in width, and are an important source of carrageenan (a stabilizer and dispersant for foods such as beverages and jams). ...
