Madhava - Madhava (English spelling)

Dates of birth and death unknown. A philosopher and prime minister of the Vijayanagar dynasty in India around 1350. Among his many works, "Outlines" is particularly famous as a comprehensive study of various philosophies. In this work, he places his own position, the non-dualistic Vedanta philosophy, at the ultimate pole, and materialism, the most contrasting ideology, at the opposite pole, and ranks 14 other philosophical systems according to their relative affinities with the two poles, objectively describing each system based on its respective texts. He is said to be the brother of Sāyana (?-1387), a famous commentator on the Vedas.

生没年不詳。1350年ころの、インド、ビジャヤナガル王朝の哲人宰相。多くの著作のなかでも『全哲学綱要』は諸哲学の通観的研究としてとくに名高い。この書では、自らの立場、不二一元論(ふにいちげんろん)派ベーダーンタ哲学を究極に、そしてこれともっとも対照的な思想である唯物論を対極に置き、その他の14の思想体系を両極との親疎関係に従って配列、各体系をそれぞれの典籍に基づいて客観的に叙述している。ベーダ注釈者として有名なサーヤナSāyana（？―1387）とは兄弟であるとされる。
