Japanese: ミヤコドリ(都鳥) - ミヤコドリ

A general term for birds in the family Haematopodidae of the order Charadriiformes, or refers to one of those species. Birds in this family are distributed worldwide, except in the polar regions and the islands of Polynesia, and are classified into one genus and six species (some scholars classify them as four or seven species). One species, the Haematopod, occasionally migrates to Japan. Its total length is 40-52 cm. It has a fat body and comes in two types: one with white and black coloring and one that is completely black. There are theories that say that one species contains both types, and theories that say that the two are separate species, and the number of species varies depending on which one is considered.

チドリ目ミヤコドリ科Haematopodidaeの鳥の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この科の鳥は極地とポリネシアの島々を除いて世界的に分布し，1属6種(学者によっては4種または7種)に分類される。日本には1種ミヤコドリがまれに渡来する。全長40～52cm。体は太り，白色と黒色の色彩のものと全身黒色のものとの2型がある。一つの種の中にも両方の型があるとする説と両者を別の種とする説があり，どちらをとるかによって種の数が違ってくる。
